Have you ever heard The Stars Sing? They indeed did sing, and shined brighter than ever in Hawaii. We're talking of course about the Hoku's or Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. "The best and brightest of Hawaiian Musical Talent"
    More than 1,100 Hawaiian music fans and members of the local music industry attended the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom ceremony as Reichel and his album "Ke'alaokamaile" won seven Hokus out of his eleven nominations, including Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Hawaiian Album of the Year. Live performers during the evening included Shimabukuro, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Ho'okena, Maunalua, Kahaunaele and Keali'i Reichel.
    Traditional Hawaiian music dominated many of the awards last Monday night. Overall, it was another year in which traditionalist Hawaiian music prevailed over all other styles of music.

HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE CDS LEAD HOKU NOMINATIONS

Honolulu, Hawai‘i — April 20, 2004— CDs featuring traditional Hawaiian music dominate the list of nominees for the 2004 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards honoring the best of Hawai'i's recording industry. Multiple Hoku award winner Keali‘i Reichel’s tribute to his family heritage, Ke‘alaokamaile, received ten nominations. Two other traditional Hawaiian music releases leading the nominations are newcomer Kainani Kahaunaele’s debut CD, Na‘u ‘Oe, with seven and previous award winner Ho‘okena’s Cool Elevation with seven.The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts announced the nominations for the 27th annual awards which will be presented on Monday, May 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel and broadcast live at 7:30 p.m. on KFVE-TV.

Keali‘i Reichel’s Ke‘alaokamaile is nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the

Year, Hawaiian Album of the Year, Favorite Entertainer of the Year, Song of the Year (for “Ka

Nohona Pili Kai” by Reichel and Puakea Nogelmeier), Hawaiian Language Performance,

Graphics (for Scott Johnson), Liner Notes (for Fred Krauss, Reichel and Nogelmeier),

Engineering (for Jim Linkner) and Haku Mele (for “Kaiona” by Nogelmeier).

Kainani Kahaunaele’s Na’u Oe is nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, Most Promising

Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year (for “Na‘u ‘Oe”), Hawaiian Language Performance

award, Liner Notes and Haku Mele (for “Ka Hinano O Puna” by Kahaunaele).

Ho‘okena’s Cool Elevation is up for Group of the Year, Album of the Year, Hawaiian Album of

the Year, Favorite Entertainer of the Year, Hawaiian Language Performance, Engineering (for

Troy Gonzalez) Haku Mele (for "Laua‘e O Nu‘uanu," by Manu Boyd). Members of the group

are Boyd, Horace Dudoit III, Glen Smith and Chris Kamaka.

Other leading finalists with four nominations each are:

· Mo’o’olelo by Kawaikapuokalani Hewett

· Thirty Years of Friends - Lifetime Party by Cecilio & Kapono

With three nominations each are:

· I Mua E Na Poki‘i , a compilation from the Kamehameha Schools

· Kanaka Ma‘oli by Weldon Kekauoha and Tapa Groove

· Kuleana by Maunalua

· Ohana by Noel Okimoto

· Won’t Stop Now by Kapena

· Ha‘i Kupuna by Kaumakaiwa Lopaka Kanaka‘ole

The strongest competition seems to be in the group of the year and male vocalist of the year categories. Group of the year nominees are all previous Hoku award winners: Amy Hanaiali‘i Gilliom & Willie K, Cecilio & Kapono, Ho‘okena, Kapena and Maunalua. Similarly, the malevocalist category is filled with past Hoku award winners: Danny Couch (for Then and Now), Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, Weldon Kekauoha, Martin Pahinui (for Ho‘olohe (Listen) ) and Keali‘i Reichel.

Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts members voted in 21 categories. A panel of Hawaiian music and language specialists selected the final nominees and winners of the Haku Mele and Hawaiian Language Performance awards.
